Isn't being an atheist, theist, agnostic, etc., to confine one's mind to the same overall system of thought?

Thereby painting oneself into a contemplative corner, enslaving the mind to the very notion of "God", rendering any objectively true interpretation of the transcendent obscured? Why not refer to ourselves by our first names, and interpret our experiences "as such", on a case-by-case basis?
